Disclaimer: I don't think Brede Hangeland is going anywhere this month. I'm not convinced he's leaving in January, either. We're 7th in the league in Marginal Goals and Goal Difference, which is as good a predictor of future success as anything. That would likely put us in Europe, which is always a great selling point when recruiting (or trying to keep) players.

But that's not the point. What I want to know is, what happens if Real Madrid jumps in with a €20m bid? My previous post is encouraging. Chris Baird, in his limited action, has actually outperformed Hangeland. Being realistic, we know he's not going to keep that up, but let's say he settles at the midpoint between this season (.188 MGP per 90 minutes) and last (.083). That puts him around the level of the underrated Dejan Stefanovic, a level which would also be easily obtainable in the transfer market.

At this point in the season, Hangeland's defensive contribution is worth just over 1 win. By having Hangeland in the lineup instead of someone like Dean Leacock, we are 3 or 4 points better. That might not sound like much, but for a half season, that's a huge impact from a single outfield player. Surely, we can do better than a player of Leacock's ability. Let's say we replace Hangeland's .18 MGP per 90 minutes with Chris Baird's target MGP per 90 of .13. Over the remaining 19 games, that's a difference of 1 marginal goal prevented - about a single point the rest of the way for team like Fulham. I can live with that, but a long-term replacement would be ideal. Can Baird even keep pace at that level, equivalent to that of the outstanding Aaron Hughes? Will we suffer from the lack of a taller, more "dominant" centre half? The numbers can't really answer these questions, unfortunately. Fortunately, we can probably say that no one player's loss will doom us to relegation. No "I" in team, right?

You lost me when you said

You lost me when you said Baird has outperformed Hangeland. Chris Baird may have improved but if you think Baird is worth one less goal than Hangers then your bonkers. Keep up with your medication for gods sake!!

I'm not saying that Baird is

I'm not saying that Baird is better, or will continue to play better. He has essentially played one game, and in that game, he played *really* well. Hangeland has performed at just about that level consistently over 18 games, which is obviously more valuable than one player having a great game out of nowhere.

Over a half a season though, the drop-off from Hangeland to a player of Aaron Hughes' level (which I used as a measuring stick for Baird's potential) is about 1 goal *prevented*. That doesn't count things like attacking on set pieces, distribution, etc (where Hangeland is probably much better), but even with that the difference is probably not much more than 2 goals over a half a season.

I have a question which may

I have a question which may help us figure out our improvement in defence.

What is the ratio of goals per game conceded before and after hodgson took over last season? We must have stopped heammoraging goals to some extent because we had a better goal difference that reading...

If it is significant, how much has been down to brede and how much is down to hodgsons italian based passing system?

Last season - 1.75 G per game

Last season - 1.75 G per game before Hodgson, 1.39 G per game after. I do think that Roy's system is the biggest reason for our success. While I do feel that Hangeland is a better player than anybody we had before, it's also worth noting that everybody improved, and they're all doing their part. Andrew Johnson and Bobby Zamora have both contributed more defensively than all of our strikers (excluding Dempsey) combined last season. Paintsil is like having a 3rd CB when required. Murphy is doing much more than anybody in last season's midfield ever did.

Not to mention that Schwarzer has been one of the best keepers in the world!
