Name our lineup!
According to a report on Fulhamweb.com (via SportingLife), Fulham will be without David Stockdale, Damien Duff, Dickson Etuhu, Simon Davies, and Brede Hangeland against FC Basle 1893 tomorrow.
So we’re looking at a thin midfield with the likelihood of Matthew Saunders, Courtney Harris, or Reece Jones on the bench. Roy may throw Chris Baird into center-mid [...]

Alumni report
Considering there are but a few loaners this season, why not a mini alumni report?
Olivier Dacourt signed for Standard Liège last week as replacement for the injured Steven Dafour. He penned a one year deal but has yet to feature for the club. Like when he first arrived at Fulham, he probably needs some time [...]

Arsenal nick it
When is the last time Fulham put forth back-to-back solid performances, only to have the result diminish it?
I honestly cannot remember. But the football gods will smile upon us, I hope.
Dan and Rich summarized the match quite well, as always.
But Vito Mannone and Zoltan Gera should both receive MOM. Mannone came out of [...]

Words for the gaffer
Jon Champion at soccernet has some enlightening words to say about our gaffer.
My favorite part:
Thank goodness, then, that Fulham have such a clever manager guiding them. I first came across Hodgson during his stint at Blackburn more than a decade ago, and subsequent encounters at major tournaments, where he dissects matches for UEFA’s Technical Committee, [...]

Carling Cup City
Eddie Johnson starts! Kagisho Evidence Dikgacoi on the bench! Stoor back from exile! Live audio from Gentleman Jim!
Exclamation Points!
Wow. Really cannot complain about that one. Our reserves (valued at roughly 25 million quid) took ManCity’s first team squad (valued at over 400 million quid) into extra time, at Eastlands.
And Fulham even scored a goal, [...]

Incomplete passing
Look at those two chalkboards. They reveal similar stories about an offense unable to score, or even threaten.
But the top board, despite appearing to show more possession of the ball and a better scoreline, is actually statiscally worse than the bottom.
Against Chelsea, Fulham managed 291 passes. Of that total 235 were successful and 56 [...]

Checking the books
A 1-1 draw in Sofia coupled with Roma losing 2-0 in Basel is a good way to start off the Europa League Group Stages.
I can’t comment on the match too much, other than what’s seen in these highlights, but it appeared we were unfortunate to go down thanks to a good strike from Michel Platini [...]

Thanks!
Two things:
1) Interesting stat: Sunday’s victory over Everton was the first time since February 2008 that Fulham came from behind to win a match at home. That match against Villa saw Brian McBride return and Billy the Badger receive a yellow card. We’ve actually had more come from behind wins on the road since then. [...]

back
After the Chelsea match, I mentioned the obvious fact that if you don’t have the ball, you cannot win.
Well, looking at these two charts that is only sort of true.
Against Villa Paul Konchesky and John Painstil had almost double the amount of passes than against Everton. Not only that, but both had way more incomplete [...]

transfer review/season preview
All the pundits and fans were saying Fulham needed to bolster their roster, particularly with quality, to cope with the Europa League and have a chance of matching last year’s successes.
Mission accomplished? Well, sort of…
Roy did add several new faces, but are they the class that the media and fans were wanting?
Former Brummie Stephen [...]

Villa
I was going to write on yesterday’s match at the time, but decided there’s nothing much to discuss.
So instead I went to the Maryland State Fair, where cattle judging and beekeeping tutorials were more entertaining. Then, a bar to enjoy one dollar natty boh’s.
It wasn’t a terrible match. Just a non-event, as Rich at CCN [...]

Perm, crunching the numbers
Similar in style to the turd sandwich Chelsea left at the Nou Camp last May, Fulham’s display in the Urals was nothing to write home about.
Or even commend, other than it did the job and saw us through.
Injuries and breathers forced Roy to make a roster and tactics fitting for an advanced-stage Carling [...]

Perm Preview
Wow, lots to get to before the lads kick off in under an hour.
First, Kagisho Dikgacoi FINALLY signs with the club. One of my biggest regrets about the Confederations Cup was never spending time to watch the lad play. But from what I hear, he was a major cog in the Bafana Bafana machine that [...]

Looking ahead to the edge of Europe
Any thoughts Roy may change things up on Thursday against Amkar Perm will be boosted after today’s reserves lost 3-0 to Arsenal reserves.
The lineup of Etheridge; Marsh-Brown, Anderson, Briggs, Smalling; Saunders, Harris, Moscatiello, Smith; Hoesen, Uwezu shows what I mean.
Even Smalling, Eddie Johnson, or Andranik didn’t make the short trip to Underhill. Perhaps McKinlay wanted [...]

CSKA London 2, Craven Cottage 0
Well, when you don’t have the ball you cannot score. And when you cannot score, you can’t win. Or sometimes even draw.
Which summed up today’s performance, as evidenced by the chart below comparing their wide-backs to ours. Jose Bosingwa and Ashley Cole had 112 total passes between them — Cashley with 60 himself, while Paul [...]

Amkar’s assault and battery
A Pyrrhic victory perhaps?
After cruising to a 3-0 lead, Amkar Perm rescue a crucial late away goal to blemish an otherwise respectable 3-1 result. And then we learn AJ will be out for 8 weeks with a dislocated shoulder/collarbone.
No wonder other managers throw in the towel in this competition at a certain point?
Roy is [...]

appearing and disappearing faces
Oh boy, more sneakiness on the offal again. Or is it incompetence?
Damien Duff signed for the club today, just a week or so after it was initially reported. But while looking at the First Team and reserves page I noticed two names were missing: Wayne Brown and Elliot Omosuzi.
Dan at Hammyend.com mentioned that Omosuzi was [...]

An opening day win, on the road??
For the first time in six years, Fulham won their opening day match, and for the first time since we were in the league that win was on the road.
Dempsey’s deflected shot off Zamora was enough for Fulham to win 1-0 over Pompey in a rather uneventful, if not typical away, match. Standard Hodgson.
Portsmouth occasionally [...]

The reserve friendly that wasn’t, and kits.
Last week I commented that the reserves were taking on the Uzbekistan U-20 National Team, and that match would be the last tune up before opening day.
But then today the offal announces this:
Supportes should note that the Reserve Team match against the Uzbekistan U20 national team at Motspur Park, Kick-Off 1pm, is a behind [...]

Счастливого пути!
A day late but not a dollar short.
The draw for the Playoff Round of the Europa League was held yesterday and Fulham are off to Perm, Russia. There are some pros and cons to this fixture, which I’ll get to later on. Right now, lets recap the Third Qualifying Round.
Only one major upset, as [...]
